There is an arrest of radial migration of neurons causing subependymal heterotopia, cortical heterotopia/dysplasia, or band heterotopia.

Band heterotopias present with a double-cortex appearance with bands of gray and white matter. 90% of cases of band heterotopia occur in females.

Alternating bands of activity will also be seen on PET.
