Isolated ectopic posterior pituitary in a young patient presenting with anterior pituitary disorder.

Mechanisms include defective migration of neurons in the posterior pituitary apparatus and trauma.

This abnormality is frequently associated with additional midline anomalies (septooptic dysplasia, etc).

Trauma from childbirth is another theorized cause. This patient had no history of trauma or traumatic delivery and is likely caused by associated failure of neuronal migration.
