Differential Diagnosis:
Glomus Jugulare
Nerve Sheath Tumor
Metastasis
Neurofibroma
Meningioma.
Originate from paraganglionic cells in numerous locations: carotid sheath, jugular bulb, middle ear
Multiple tumors in approximately 3% of spontaneous cases and 25% of familial cases
Most cases histologically benign but locally invasive.
More common in females (3:1).
Flow voids useful feature in distinguishing between other masses
“Salt & Pepper” appearance
Not always present
Intense contrast enhancement.
Lateral growth
Otologic symptoms: pulsatile tinnitus, conductive hearing loss
Medial growth
Glossopharyngeal, vagus, and spinal accessory deficits.
